Is A Pet Mouse Right For You? Here’s What To Consider

When it comes to picking out the perfect pet, mice are probably at the bottom of lots of people’s lists.

Outside of Mickey, mice have gotten a pretty bad rap and they’re not an animal that most people are welcoming into their house with open arms.

However, contrary to popular belief, mice can actually make great pets.

Plus, having a pet mouse makes for a pretty good punch bowl conversation at your next party.

So, is a pet mouse right for you? Keep reading to get more information on what to consider.

Do You Have Kids Or Are You Expecting A Baby?

Some pets are more well suited for kids than others, and mice certainly aren’t the best option for people with young children.

Your kid may not be able to properly handle a mouse and may accidentally injure it. Mice can also bite if they feel agitated or threatened.

Also, because kids’ immune systems tend to be weaker than adults, children are at a higher risk of catching diseases from mice (this is pretty rare, but still possible). The fact that kids don’t usually wash their hands too often doesn’t help either.

Pregnant women are also at a higher risk of getting sick due to the bacteria that mice can carry. So, if you’re pregnant, a pet mouse probably isn’t the best option.

What’s Your Schedule Like?

No matter what kind of animal you decide to welcome into your family, having a pet can be time consuming.

Fortunately, for people with busy schedules, mice can be a great option.

Mice tend to be very independent and keep themselves entertained for long periods of time. But this doesn’t mean that your pet mouse won’t benefit from some daily QT.

Even though you don’t need to constantly check in on your mouse, it’s still important to make time to hold and play with your pet.

Do You Have Other Pets?

If you already have pets, introducing a new animal is always a bit of a gamble.

It’s important to research whether or not your current pet can get along with a mouse and vice versa.

You don’t want to accidentally set any of your pets up to get eaten lol – seriously though.

How Much Do You Want To Spend

Budget is always something to consider when deciding to get a pet.

Being a pet parent is expensive, and these expenses don’t magically go away once you bring your pet home.

Luckily for you and your pockets, a pet mouse won’t have you pawning your favorite ring to cover the costs, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to spend anything.

The cost of buying or adopting a mouse is usually minimal. In some cases you can even get a mouse for free.

Other expenses will include an aquarium, food, bedding, a water bottle, and toys.

Lifespan

I really hate to be morbid, but the lifespan of an animal is something you should always think about. Not only does this help you understand the level of commitment you could be signing up for, but it can also help you decide whether or not a pet that may not live very long is right for you and your family.

In general, smaller animals tend to have much shorter lifespans than bigger ones.

The average lifespan of a mouse is between 1.5 and 3 years.

Are You Ready For A Pet Mouse?

So, are you ready to head to the nearest pet store and pick up a mouse? Or, have you decided that this might not be the best pet for you?
